This photo was taken in Delta's MRO facility in Atlanta, GA. It is one of the largest Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) campuses of its type in the world with over 9,600 aviation technicians and support staff servicing all of Delta's planes. They also provide MRO work for an additional 150 other airlines in the USA and from around the world.
I knew that, for this photo, having all of the exposed metal would cause problems if I used any hard light, so a very large "Soft" light source would be required to be able to get an interesting image. Using a motion picture light modifier, a 12x12 silk, allow us to get what I was needing. I have been using these for years.
My assistant & I toured part of this facility a few days before to get ideas of what and how to shoot this project. As a result I knew what I was going to need for lighting and my crew was able to set it up in about an hour. All I had to do was fine tune the light then show the technician what I wanted him to do.
When shooting with "Real" people, there is an element of chance in getting them to be able to relax and just be themselves. Fortunately I have years of experience working with real people and I just sit down and spend a few minutes talking to them so they can become comfortable with "the process". These few minutes spent with the mechanic pays off in getting a credible image.
The Gear: Canon digital camera set to 1/80 second shutter speed, 100 ISO and a Canon 16-35mm zoom lens using 16mm set to f4.5.
The Light: Ambient.
